Pheasant Hunting Season Is Here
October 30, 2024
South Dakota’s traditional pheasant hunting season has started and runs through January 31, 2025. Once the harvest season ends, late-season pheasant hunting offers ample options for hunters due to the cold weather reducing pheasant coverings, aka hiding places. With many hunters opting against braving the snowy conditions, late-season pheasant hunting offers winter hunters less competition. “South Dakota has the most birds, most opportunity, and most successful hunters,” - South Dakota Game, Fish, and Parks.

Faulk County is a hunter’s haven with an abundance of:

- Game Production Areas (GPAs) - Generally managed for the production and maintenance of all wildlife.
- Waterfowl Production Areas - Owned by the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service as satellites of the National Wildlife Refuge system.
- School and Public Lands - Located in the western half of South Dakota and available to the public for hunting and fishing.
- Bureau of Land Management - Land managed for livestock grazing and open to public hunting mostly west of the Missouri River.

The Game Production Areas (GPAs) allow all-terrain vehicles, as well as accessible vehicles for disabled hunters. Because of Faulk County’s vast hunting offerings, it is a top tourist destination during hunting season.
